Reappropriated from archaeological culture and displaced from their natural context, Assi’s columns serve as temporal portals, guarding an empty space. Drawing inspiration from the six remaining columns of the original fifty-four at the temple of Jupiter in Baalbeck, the triad of ceramic columns ascend from the gallery’s floor, evoking an epiphany of time immemorial, where memory and the present coalesce into a singular object that speaks of the contemporary world. These columns, belonging to an imaginary temple, are crowned with gargoyles and fantastical bestiaries, warding off malevolence and vigilantly safeguarding a sanctuary that is enigmatically absent.
