MY CITY MY PUPPET
There is a saying in the Middle East describing Beirut as ‘the bride of the oriental world’, ‘The lady of the world’… descriptions always revealing Beirut’s image as a beautiful, mysterious character … a feminine character.
Following this way of thinking, I thought about using Beirut to portray the Lebanese woman, and vice versa… They’ve both been through the same horrific moments, the same thrills, the same history … they shared hopes and depressions, cries and silences, stagnations and dynamics. They both looked at the similar uncertain future and depended on a male oriented system and destiny.
The idea is to show how identical they are, how far deep they share the same traits and how the characteristics of one are mirrored through the other, where both are hung by external strings over which they have no power. A beautiful image of a ‘muse’ hung like a puppet.
